This is not just a survey of a lake. It is an investment in the future of 42 million lives and the knowledge that belongs to all humanity.

Food security. Biodiversity recovery. Climate adaptation. Scientific discovery. Economic transformation for three nations. Usalama wa chakula. Urejesho wa bioanuwai. Urekebishaji wa hali ya hewa. Ugunduzi wa kisayansi.

The Survey That Started It All Utafiti Ulioanzisha Yote

In 1927, Michael Graham aboard the SS Kavirondo conducted the first comprehensive ecological survey of Lake Victoria — documenting indigenous fish fauna across the world's largest tropical lake in a relatively pristine state.

One hundred years later, no comparable lake-wide assessment has been repeated. The ecosystem has undergone dramatic transformation.

Miaka mia moja baadaye, hakuna tathmini ya ziwa zima inayolingana iliyorudiwa.

"We return to where Graham began, armed with the tools of a new century, to ask: what has one hundred years done to Africa's greatest lake?"
"Tunarudi mahali Graham alipoanza, tukiwa na zana za karne mpya, kuuliza: miaka mia moja imefanya nini kwa ziwa kuu la Afrika?"

The Lake Today Ziwa Leo

The communities surrounding Lake Victoria depend on its waters for their livelihoods — from fishing and processing to trade. Women drive the dagaa economy, sorting, drying, and packaging fish that feeds millions across East Africa.

But the lake is changing. Species are disappearing, water quality is declining, and the fishing economy that sustains 42 million people is under unprecedented pressure.

Voices of the Lake

Why This MattersKwa Nini Hii ni Muhimu

Community members at Lake Victoria
"The fish we used to catch when I was young — my children have never seen them. This survey must tell the world what we have lost." "Samaki tuliowahi kuvua nilipokuwa kijana — watoto wangu hawajawahi kuwaona."
Fisherman, Kisumu Mvuvi, Kisumu
"Without baseline data, we are making policy in the dark. This survey gives us the evidence we need to act."
Fisheries Scientist
"The lake feeds us, gives us water, gives us life. When the lake is sick, we are all sick."
BMU Chairperson, Mwanza
"Graham's survey documented a world that no longer exists. The centenary gives us a unique chance to measure exactly what has changed."
Academic, Makerere University
"This is not just science — it is the story of East Africa. The lake is the heart of our region's economy and culture."
NGO Leader
"Tourists come to see the Serengeti. They should also see the wonders beneath the surface of Lake Victoria."
